Stay safe/Stay home
Since the Covid-19 virus appeared, most of us are living something we never thought, a quarantine. Most countries around the world demand civilians to not go out of their houses unless it’s strictly necessary. In order to not spread the virus and protect those who are more likely to get sick. I am currently working at home since I’m a software developer, but I do know how tedious it’s to stay home. For the greater good, we need to work together before this situation becomes some Resident Evil or The Last Of Us outbreak (videogame joke there).
As a gamer I know videogames are the ideal activity to do in this situation. So, I present to you 5 huge videogames (played by myself) that can keep you busy for dozens of hours while having a bunch of fun.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (Game Of The Year Edition)
First one of my all-time favorites, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Based on the books written by Andrzej Sapkowski, the game follows the adventures of witcher Geralt of Rivia across lands devastated by war and monsters. The game is an action RPG with a deep story-telling that changes according to the decision and actions we make. The Game of the Year (GOTY) edition features over 50+ hours of additional gameplay to the already 100+ hours of the base game.
Featuring a beautiful and dangerous world to explore, amazing story-telling across the whole game and enjoyable gameplay where we will have to learn the strengths and weaknesses of the monsters to defeat them. This is a total must buy if you don’t have it in your collection. Also, there’s the Netflix TV series which plot is prior to the videogames. So, if you watched the TV series and enjoyed it, why not give this a try?
The game is available on all current-generation consoles (PlayStation 4, Xbox-One and Nintendo Switch) and PC.
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
If you’re not into fantasy, but more sci-fi stuff, I got you cover. Metal Gear Solid V is the last game (until now) of the worldwide famous franchise created by Hideo Kojima. The development of the game suffered some issues due to a difference in ideas between the developers and publishers. That aside, the game can be enjoyable for both veterans and newcomers to the franchise. The game features amazing graphics, a fairly interesting plot and addicting gameplay.
After 9 years in a coma, Big Boss wakes up to find himself attacked by hostiles forces. After barely escaping and reuniting with his old friend Ocelot, they make their way to the new mother base. Everything Big Boss built was gone 9 years ago, and now its time for revenge. The game follows the journey of revenge of Big Boss, through the battlefields of Afghanistan and South-Africa. In the process, we will be collecting resources to upgrade the mother base and recruiting staff to unlock weapons and tools. The game offers about 100+ hours if you want to complete everything.
The ideal with this franchise is to play all games, but if you don’t want to spend more money or rather stick to one gaming device, at least buy Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes. This is the prologue of The Phantom Pain and shows you the fall of mother base and how Big Boss ends up in a coma. You can find the digital version of this prologue for 10$ or less
Both Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain are available on PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC.
Persona 5
For those who like animated stylish tv series (anime) this is a total must-play. Persona 5 follows the steps of a group of teenagers that work part-time as the “Phantom Thieves”. They are a group of thieves that steals the evil desires of adults by entering in the metaverse; a world made of the cognitive subconscious. Yeah, I know it sounds complicated, because it is, and it’s hard to explain an over 100+ story plot in a few words. To get the full explanation just play the game, it’s a stylish JRPG with turn-based combat, and amazing soundtrack (really just listen to it on youtube).
The features the beautiful location of Shinjuku (Tokyo, Japan) to explore and do a ridiculous amount of activities. Activities that will help the development of our character and enable new relationships with other characters. These characters are known as “confidants” and will grant certain perks after progressing on their side stories. Some of these perks allow your teammates to do special actions in combat or unlock special skills. Some others allow you to buy new weapons or medical supplies. There is a bunch of perks to name them all but the proper use of them is essential when traversing the metaverse.
The game is currently exclusive on the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4.
Gran Turismo & Forza Motorsport
For the cars and race fans, there’s a tie between Gran Turismo and Forza Motorsport. Racing videogames are usually not very long, but you can enjoy dozens of hours with any of these. Also, even though these games offer multiplayer features, the single-player career modes of each are reason enough to play them. In these modes, you will be progressing through championships to become the best professional racer. Acquiring new cars and fulfilling the requirements to compete in most challenging championships. Both games feature ultra-realistic graphics and gameplay, and very enjoyable career modes.
The Gran Turismo franchise is a worldwide seller Playstation exclusive you can find in all their consoles. Below is the opening trailer of the latest entry in the series; Gran Turismo Sport.
Forza Motorsport is one of the best-selling exclusives available on the Xbox and you can play it in all their consoles. So, I’ll let you down below the video of the latest entry in the franchise; Forza Motorsport 7.
Dying Light
Finally, for the horror fans out there I recommend Dying Light. An action and survival game with a first-person perspective. Here we’ll traverse through a city in ruins due to a zombie apocalypse. During the day, we will be hunters, using parkour to traverse the city, gathering resources, helping survivors and placing defenses against the infected. During the night, we will be preys, zombies became more dangerous, new threats appear and of course, the darkness reigns.
The game features a huge city to explore, good graphics and exciting gameplay. Also, even though the main game is quite short, the side content and exploration last for a few dozens of hours. Finally, Dying Light is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
So here you have it, 5 (well six actually) games you can play alone for dozens and dozens of hours. Many genres for most tastes in videogames, hopefully, this will make your quarantine a little bit easier. So, thanks for reading and remember: Stay safe/Stay home.
